Essential Oils
Essential Oils are the "life force" or essence of the plant and are known as nature's living energy. Essential Oils are the natural, aromatic volatile (easily evaporated) liquids found in roots, stems, flowers, leaves, trees, resins, bark, heartwood, bushes, and seeds. The oil or resin carries nutrients throughout the plant & protect it from any form of stress, infection or disease.
Each plant oil is extracted from a single botanical source through a number of possible methods for commercial use, however, these volatile liquids are NOT considered "true essential oils" unless they have been produced properly through steam distillation of organic plant materials ~flowers, leaves, roots, trees, stems, bark, resins, bushes, seeds or cold expression (from citrus rinds). In the early 1900's, a French cosmetic chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, was severely burned in a laboratory accident and used the nearby lavender oil from the lab, for his burn, which healed his skin completely. He dedicated the rest of his life to the study of essential oils and it is he who coined the term "aromatherapy". Aromatherapy is an alternative, complimentary therapy that uses high quality therapeutic grade essential oils to support the bodies innate healing abilities. The only way to insure that essential oils are of such a high quality, is to begin with plants which have been organically grown (no chemicals ever), and then properly distill them to maintain the integrity of the pure essential oil and all of it's natural chemical healing constituents, as well as it's high vibrational properties. The quality of an essential oil's aroma and potency for supporting our wellness is determined by the health of the organic plant from which it is derived, altitude where the plant is grown, time of harvest, the proper temperature, pressure and time in the distillation process. When all of these components are taken into account, Essential Oils will convey a sense of vitality and Qi (life force). It is crucial to use only therapeutic grade essential oils, such as those from Young Living, if you wish to incorporate them into your daily wellness program. ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential Oils when inhaled, pass thru the olfactory nerves & affect, among other parts of the brain, the Limbic system ~ one of the most
primitive regions of consciousness and designed for our survival, as well as a gland in the Limbic system called the Amygdala which plays a major role in the storing and releasing of emotional trauma. The only way to stimulate this gland is thru the sense of smell, making aromatherapy and the intentional use of essential oils a very effective way to release emotional trauma.
High quality essential oils are capable of working at the cellular level to transform and help us maintain our overall well-being and may be used for the prevention of illness, as well as being very powerful to return us to our normal state of peacefulness & wholeness.
Essential Oils have many therapeutic properties which make them beneficial for supporting the immune system and decreasing the damaging effects of stress such as creating relaxation to reduce anxiety, irritability, upset stomach, tension, sore muscles and joint pain.
Essential Oils are powerful natural agents that are supportive to our overall sense of well-being as they promote vitality, energy, harmony, calming to the nervous system, relaxation for body/mind/spirit, uplifting our spirits, supporting emotional balance, and deep peaceful sleep.

History
Essential Oils were mankind's first medicine and have been used by the ancient civilizations for about five thousand years. They can be found in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Chinese manuscripts & we find 188 references to essential oils & anointing in the Bible. A great deal of knowledge about essential oils was passed down from the Egyptians and some of their papyrus manuscripts date as far back as 2800 BC on the use of herbs and aromatics. The priests and priestesses were the physicians and thus the dispensers of oils for healing in their temples. Their specific formulations were recorded as recipes for illnesses, for restoring youthfulness, and for preserving the body for the afterlife.
The ancient famous Greek physician Hippocrates, the Father of Modern Medicine, is quoted as saying that "the way to health is to have an
aromatic bath and scented massage every day". Knowledge of essential oils continued to be passed down to the Roman & Arabian physicians, and eventually to the Christian European healers such as the monks and nuns, who cultivated their own aromatic plants and used many spices, herbs and aromatic oils from the Far East in their healing work.
Hildegard of Bingen was by far the most prolific writer on the use of healing plants and oils and her writings were used as a point of reference for abbeys throughout Europe in the 12th century and for hundreds of years afterwards.
Today, we combine what the ancients knew all along, with modern science and research to utilize aromatherapy for our physical, mental, emotional & spiritual well-being.

The Science of Aromatherapy
When a YLTG (Young Living Therapeutic Grade) essential oil is diffused, it's inhaled and processed through the olfactory system, which then sends the therapeutic benefits of the aroma to the brain. Depending on the specific constituents in the oil, you may begin to feel the release of negative emotions, the soothing of undue muscle tension, or experience the cleansing effect of the oils as your body eliminates toxins.
There are two main ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy: inhalation and topical application.
Inhalation
When inhaling oils for aromatherapy, here are some commonly used techniques:
- Inhale essential oils directly-simply pour 1-2 drops in the palms of hands, cup the hands & inhale slowly for a minute or two.
- Diffuse essential oils using a device that disperses the oil into the air in a micro-fine vapor. Young Living offers a line of essential oil diffusers that do not use heat, therefore, they effectively spread the aromatic benefits of essential oils through the air without damaging their important constituents.
Diffusing in your home or office helps to purify the air quality, as well as promote deeper breathing and provides an atmosphere of peacefulness & relaxation in your space.

- Use essential oils with a humidifier. Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil on a tissue or small cloth and place in front of the escaping steam.
Avoid putting the oil directly into your humidifier, as it will float on top of the water instead of dispersing with the water vapor.
- Pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of essential oil. Lower your face a few inches over the bowl and cover your head and the bowl with a towel, then breathe deeply and slowly.
Topical Application
Essential oils can be applied directly to the skin. Be sure to read the label before using oils topically, as some oils must be first diluted with a carrier oil – like Young Living's V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex – prior to use.
Key areas for topical application are:
- Crown of head
- Temples
- Behind ears
- Wrists
- Back of the Neck
- Upper or lower back
- Abdomen
- Over vital organs
- Soles and tops of feet
- Ankles
Steps for topical application are:
- Place 2-3 drops of oil in the palm of your hand or directly on the desired area.
- If placing oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto the desired point of application.
- If applying directly to the desired area, massage the oil into your skin using a circular motion. Repeat 2-3 times per day as desired.
Note: Essential oils are very potent and some may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply a carrier oil (such as cold pressed, organic coconut oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil) or pure vegetable oil to the area to dilute.
Please read label direction or check your Essential Oils Reference Guide for each individual oil before using.
